When you have lost your Illinois driver’s license for driving drunk, or as a habitual traffic offender, the State will not restore your driving privileges without evidence that you have changed your ways. Moreover, as the legal consequences for DUIs continue to become increasingly harsh each and every year, any delay may prohibit you from any driving relief which may be available to you now. Consider also that any delay in seeking the restoration of your driving privileges may result in more costly obstacles, such as the installation of a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) in your vehicle at your expense.

Hundreds of citizens across Illinois have turned to Elroy Sandquist of Molohon Sandquist & James, LLP, for effective representation in driver's license reinstatement hearings. Mr. Sandquist was a former Prosecutor and Hearing Officer for the Illinois Secretary of State’s Department of Administrative Hearings — the very agency you will be facing. His invaluable insight offers our clients a good chance of getting their driver's license back, even if they have multiple suspensions or traffic violations.

Mr. Sandquist also defends Chicagoland clients against DUI criminal charges.

Reinstating Your Illinois Driver's License

The purpose of your hearing before the Secretary of State is to determine if you have addressed any underlying issues of alcohol abuse or drug use if you were convicted of DUI. Without proper preparation and guidance, you have little to no chance of being allowed to drive again legally. However, if you choose to take a chance and continue to drive illegally, you will only compound your problems and potentially face mandatory jail time.

Attorney Sandquist will review your history of substance abuse and any steps which you have taken to address it. He will thoroughly prepare you for the administrative hearing, suggest appropriate substance abuse treatment that the court system may not have required and help you decide which of your legal options to pursue.

At your hearing, you must be prepared for a vigorous and wide-ranging cross examination by a Secretary of State Hearing Representative, who may be indifferent to any hardship that your past actions have caused you and/or your family. Attorney Sandquist will help prepare you for this vigorous cross-examination.

Additional Information

If you are convicted of driving after suspension or revocation, and the underlying offense was alcohol-related (DUI), you face a mandatory jail term of 10 days. However, you may qualify for the Sheriff's Work Alternative Program (SWAP), which allows you to serve 30 days on work detail in lieu of jail.

If your license was suspended because of too many accumulated traffic violations, Mr. Sandquist will examine those previous cases to see if any can be dismissed or reduced to lesser charges. If so, he may be able to find a path to driver's license restoration.
